Our Story

Welcome to Clennell Hall – A Living Story in Stone

Nestled deep in the tranquil Coquet Valley, where the River Alwin winds through the heart of Northumberland National Park, Clennell Hall stands as one of the county’s most atmospheric historic houses. A Grade II listed building with roots reaching back to the twelfth century, it began life as a medieval peel tower — a refuge in turbulent Border times — and has evolved over the centuries into the welcoming retreat you see today.

From Norman barons and Border Reivers to Victorian gentry and modern-day travellers, generations have shaped Clennell Hall’s story. Its walls bear the marks of defence and devotion, of artistry and endurance. The carved coat of arms above the door, the famed “Chevy Chase” plaster frieze, and the lovingly preserved tower all speak of centuries of Northumbrian life.

Today, Clennell Hall remains at the heart of the valley — a hotel, music venue, and home from home where guests can experience history not as a museum piece but as a living presence. Whether you are here to explore the wild beauty of Upper Coquetdale, to enjoy local food and music in Rocky’s Bar, or simply to rest beneath the same beams that have sheltered generations before, you are part of a story that continues to unfold.

Welcome to Clennell Hall — where heritage meets hospitality, and every stone tells a tale.
